Trospium chloride is used to treat overactive bladder (bladder function disorder that causes a sudden or frequent urge to urinate).
This medicine calms and relaxes the bladder. It reduces the number of toilet visits and the urge to urinate.
Take Trospium chloride exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.
Take this medicine on an empty stomach, at least 1 hour before a meal. Try to take it at the same time each day.
Trospium chloride is available as a conventional tablet or extended-release capsule.
Swallow the conventional tablet whole with a glass of water.
If you are taking the extended-release type of capsule (usually labelled as "XR"), swallow it whole with a glass of water. Do not divide, chew or crush the capsule.
The dose of this medicine will be decided by your doctor. Your doctor will advise you on the treatment timeframe depending on the severity of your condition.
Trospium chloride must be taken regularly for it to be effective. Continue taking this medicine even when you feel better. Do not stop taking it unless instructed by the doctor.
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.
DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.
If you often forget to take your medicine, let your doctor and pharmacist know.
Alert your doctor if you have the following conditions:
- urinary retention (inability to completely empty the bladder when urinating)
- gastric retention (a problem in emptying the contents of the stomach)
- severe bowel problems e.g. toxic megacolon (widening of large intestines caused by complications of infection or inflammation)
- uncontrolled or untreated angle-closure glaucoma (glaucoma caused by blocked drainage canals, resulting in a sudden increase in pressure inside the eyes)
- rapid heartbeat
- myasthenia gravis (muscle weakness disorder)
- severe liver disease
as Trospium chloride may not be suitable for you.
Inform your doctor if you have the following conditions:
- obstruction in the bladder causing impaired urine flow
- other stomach or bowel problems e.g. inflammation of the large intestines, pyloric stenosis (narrowing of the stomach outlet), muscle weakness of the bowel wall
- controlled or undergoing treatment for angle-closure glaucoma
- heart disease
- overactive thyroid
- hiatus hernia (a condition when part of the stomach extends through the diaphragm) associated with heartburn
- autonomic neuropathy (damage of nerves that regulates vital body functions such as heart rate, blood pressure and bowel activities)
- Alzheimer’s disease (a progressive disease which destroys memory and other important mental functions)
- kidney disease
- mild to moderate liver disease
The extended-release type of capsule is not recommended for use in individuals with severe kidney disease.
Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Be sure to check with your doctor or pharmacist before giving this medicine to the elderly. Elderly people may be more sensitive to the side effects.
Keep your appointments with your doctor. Your doctor needs to monitor your condition and check your response to the medication regularly. Routine tests (e.g. kidney function, urine volume, voiding patterns) may be done while you are being treated with Trospium chloride. Your doctor will advise you about how often you will need to have these tests.
Trospium chloride may cause drowsiness, dizziness, or blurred vision. If affected, do not drive or take part in any activity in which you need to be alert or need to see clearly.
Other side effects include any of the following: headache, dry mouth, constipation, stomach pain, stomach wind, indigestion, nausea, tiredness, and dry eyes or nose.
If you develop rashes, breathlessness, swollen face, eyes, mouth, tongue or throat, stop taking this medicine and inform your doctor immediately. These could be signs of an allergic reaction.
Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.
Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any of these medicines:
- medicines to treat depression e.g. amitriptyline, imipramine
- asthma medicines e.g. salbutamol
- amantadine (medicine to treat Parkinson’s disease, a disorder that affects movement)
- procainamide (medicine for irregular heartbeat)
- vancomycin (certain antibiotic)
- morphine (strong painkiller)
- metformin (medicine for diabetes)
- metoclopramide (medicine for nausea and vomiting)
This list does not include all medicines that may interact with Trospium chloride.
Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
Avoid alcohol.
Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.
Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
